The best way to predict the future is to invent it

The software landscape is constantly changing and while software may be eating the world, those who fail to adapt will be swallowed whole. At EclipseSource, we are constantly challenging ourselves to ensure we are working on interesting problems while satisfying our customers’ needs. We are continually evaluating the software landscape to ensure that our solutions are not only relevant today but can stand the test of time. At EclipseSource, we have expertise in developer productivity, open source solutions, mobile technologies, modelling, and framework design and implementation. In fact, many of the frameworks we designed a decade ago are still being adopted today.

Each year we gather to challenge our assumptions.

As with all my trips to Germany, it starts with good food, good wine and good friends.

We ran separate strategy workshops for each project. We focused on our strengths, our fears and challenged each other to find ways to disrupt our industry. We then broke into a smaller group and went off site. An iPad Pro arrived just in time for our trip (unboxing video to follow).

We stayed at an 800 year old monastery. As a Canadian, I find this remarkable. We have very few 800 year old anythings. We used the time to distill the results of all our smaller strategy meetings and focus on our future. We also enjoyed some more good food & drinks.

The entire week was very productive and I’m super excited for where we are headed.

After a week in Baden Wurttemberg, I took the train to Berlin to run a J2V8 workshop.

On the train I hacked on J2V8 and Node integration. The idea was to allow deep linking between Node.js and Java. I’m happy to say that my work was a success and if you’re interested in the results, I’ll be speaking about it at EclipseCon 2016.

I had a great time in Berlin. I presented my work on J2V8 and helped a customer adopt it for their needs. Ralf Sternberg (a Berlin native) travelled with me, and showed me around.

I enjoyed many Christmas markets, fun fashions, and a few more good German beers.
