Innoopract and Code 9 announced the creation of EclipseSource on November 19, 2008 and introduced a new level of collaboration with Eclipse open source. EclipseSource brings together recognized experts from key Eclipse projects, professional processes and the ability to meet the technical requirements of commercial adopters. EclipseSource provides a complete range of products and services from fundamental technology development, production and developer support, training and mentoring to commercial management and provisioning solutions.
The adoption of Eclipse in conventional software circles such as rich desktop and internet applications, middleware and servers continues to accelerate. With this increase in use comes an increase in typical IT requirements -- support, extension, custom technology, management, etc. EclipseSource delivers industrial strength backing for one of the most popular open source platforms.
With leadership roles in over ten key Eclipse projects, EclipseSource provides coverage for all essential Eclipse runtime technology under one roof. The new organization has staff in North America and Europe and a truly global customer base ranging from Fortune 100 corporations to individual developers.
"This creates a win-win-win situation in Eclipse where the ecosystem gets the technology and support they need, projects get an infusion of attention to new and existing areas and we get to have fun working in a fantastic community,” says Jeff McAffer of Code 9. Jeff McAffer, based in Ottawa, Canada will provide technical leadership to EclipseSource while Jochen Krause, of Innoopract and based in Karlsruhe, Germany, will combine technical and business skills to lead the combined effort.
EclipseSource offers commercial users a previously unattainable level of participation in open source – maximizing the benefits for users and and producers alike.
"An agile organization with capabilities in all these areas is impressive and has a huge business potential. This is an effort to watch over the coming months."
Richard Seibt, CEO of the Open Source Business Foundation and former CEO / board member at IBM, United Interned, SuSE, Novell.
"I am happy to see this evolution in the Eclipse ecosystem. Enabling symbiotic relationships between open source technology leaders and the industry is a model that is going to have a big impact."
Skip McGaughey, Executive Director of the Open Health Tools Foundation and former Chairman of the Eclipse Board of Stewards.
Q: I thought there were Eclipse trademark guidelines that would prevent you using the name EclipseSource?
A: We fully agree with and support the Eclipse trademark guidelines. EclipseSource as a trademark and domain name have been in use in the Eclipse community prior to the creation of the guidelines and are grandfathered by the guidelines.
Q: Will you change the license for Eclipse code?
A: EclipseSource in no way owns or controls the licensing of the code at eclipse.org so, no, we couldn't even if we wanted to (and we don't).
Q: Will I have to pay to get Eclipse now?
A: No. Eclipse is open source and continues to be so. EclipseSource does not own or control the creation, release or distribution of the code at eclipse.org.
Q: Can I pay you for Eclipse?
A: We do offer commercial developer and production support for key runtime technologies at Eclipse.
Q: Will the EclipseSource committers continue to participate in the community?
A: Absolutely! The Eclipse community is amazingly vibrant and active. The EclipseSource team will continue to invest heavily in contributing leadership, code, ideas, feedback and help within the community. The continued health and well-being of the community is one of our top priorities.
